OUR HISTORY

The Roots

The story of S. Rider Construction began in 1971, born of out of necessity, hard-work, grit, and a blessing from the Lord that wasn’t realized until later. Steve and Sandra Rider met as teenagers and married at eighteen to journey through life together. Steve had a strong foundation in construction through his family and his early adult life in the trades, while Sandra’s grandfather also worked in the industry in Detroit. Through the years, Steve learned and built an expertise. As he contributed in the workforce though, he noticed a discrepancy in the quality of craftsmanship and felt compelled to provide something better.

Their business began a few years later when Steve decided to take a leap of faith by quitting his job to start his own business. During this season of life, they had three young children at home with Sandra expecting their fourth. As young parents, finances were slim, and life’s demands were challenging. On the day that Steve came home to tell Sandra that he had quit his job, they only had three dollars in their bank account. Their business endeavor started with just a single job lined up and a commitment to create a successful business while staying true to their values.

Even though, they only had a single job lined up initially, the Lord continued to provide. Small jobs transitioned into remodels then into home additions, high-end custom homes, and eventually multi-million dollar commercial projects. Throughout the growth of the business their core values remained steadfast – honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity – all of which centered on giving glory to God. Through the years they intentionally surrendered their business, it’s profits, and their lives to the Lord. While not easy along the way, God provided for them and was faithful much like he always is and always will be. By staying true to their convictions and allowing God to be the guide of their business a reputation of professionalism and honesty was born.

The Next Chapter

A significant part of their story involved the growth of their family, particularly the addition of their sons – Jeff and Stevie. The boys grew up around construction, learning and soaking up knowledge & skills as they grew through their teenage years. Eventually they both invested full time into the business with their time and talents. They brought fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the company that helped grow the business into new avenues while maintaining the legacy of the business rooted in honesty. As Sandra reflected back on the business and her sons she expressed out of gratitude that “their sons gave them their lives.” The business grew because of their contributions and commitment to their family.

Some of the most notable builds during this season were projects like Connection Point Church. Steve always had a dream of physically building a church from the ground up for the Lord. Now he had the blessing of doing so alongside his sons.

Building on the Legacy

Now, The Refiner’s Collective is building on the legacy that spans nearly five decades. Steve’s grandson, Riggs, grew up watching his grandparents’ dedication to the craft, the impact they had on the community, and their unwavering faith in our sovereign Lord. Inspired, Riggs set out to honor their legacy by continuing the family business and upholding its values. Steve’s close friend, Jimmy, and his son, Jeff, share the same passion and deep-rooted connection to S. Rider Construction. Over the course of both of their lives, Steve has influenced, taught, and mentored them both. Together, they formed The Refiner’s Collective. And, it’s with joy and blessing that they carry on the legacy of S. Rider Construction – a legacy built on honesty and provision from the Lord. Ultimately, the refiner in our lives is God, and this business is a small portion of his collective that will serve him, glorify him, and love his people.
